A few kilometers from Megalopolis in Arcadia and near the picturesque village of Isari is the strangest church in the world.

However, it is a small church at the end of the world, whose reputation is for literally defying and abolishing the laws of physics.

It is an attraction that attracts visitors as seventeen large trees spring from the roof of a small stone temple, while waters from a headboard gush from its foundations.

The roots of the trees are not visible and only the trunk and branches running through the walls and roof are visible.

The beautiful church is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as a “wonderful cliff”.

According to religious tradition, the number of trees is the same as the year St. Theodora died.

Legend has it that where he was executed, his blood turned into a river and his hair into a tree.

Many argue that there is no logical explanation for the unique phenomenon, as the weight of the plane trees would knock down the small chapel or topple its roof.

Science tried to explain the miracle. In the summer of 1996, the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments Restoration Directorate asked the Patras University Geophysics Laboratory to investigate a possible static problem.

At that time, a groundbreaking test was performed with georadar and electrical tomography.

The results showed that the root system of the trees penetrated the stone structure of the walls, forming voids. Through these it reaches the ground and actually creates a grid that keeps the building upright.

This was followed by restoration work (1998–1999), in which the wall was cleaned and grouted without cement injection so that the roots of the trees did not dry out.

The church is Byzantine and was built in the 12th century AD. in honor of St Theodora, who was executed in the region. It is only four meters wide and five meters long.
